Leading rail sector initiative driving sustainability

Client Challenge

The sector faces several challenges:

• Despite being the most sustainable mobility option, the rail sector faces pressure from regulators, customers and employees to develop sustainably
• Complexity of the value chain requires engagement and collaboration with many parties
• Pressure on Procurement to focus on cost as the primary decision criteria, making it challenging to include sustainability, sustainable criteria or life cycle costing

H&Z Approach

H&Z were key in the revitalization of the initiative bringing sector and sustainability expertise and deep experience in complex project management and stakeholder engagement. Working in close collaboration with members of Railsponsible, a vision and mission were set and driven forward by H&Z.

As the initiative develops under H&Z's facilitation, new topical work-streams have been integrated into Railsponsible keeping it at the forefront of advancing sustainability in the sector. The visibility and prominence of Railsponsible have also been developed establishing it within the rail ecosystem - this has a multiplying effect for Railsponsible's mission to drive sustainability within the sector.

As always H&Z engages with the initiative with head, heart and hand, creating a friendly and approachable atmosphere that supports collaborative exchange and development.

Results

• Constant increase in membership, highlighting relevance and importance of the initiative
• Active support of member companies sustainability and sustainable procurement capabilities
• Targetted deliverables including sector specific guidelines for Product Carbon Footprint and the inclusion of carbon related tender criteria
• Supply chain mapping of key materials

H&Z has driven the engagement of member companies, supporting their sustainability and sustainable procurement efforts and thereby driving sustainability throughout the rail sector.
