SUSTAINX Roundtable: biodegradable materials
At our virtual roundtable, our guest speakers highlighted numerous examples of the new biodegradable materials, the challenges of switching to them, and the reasons they are currently in low usage.
Biodegradable Materials
Together with our expert guest speakers Annebeth de Witte, Founder of Co, and textile engineer and environmental sciences expert Jana Kerkhoff, we took a look at some examples of the exciting new biodegradable materials, the challenges faced in switching to them and why their use is currently so narrow; we concluded with biodegradable material procurement best practices.
Switching biodegradable materials may seem like a quick fix, but if implemented poorly, they can be detrimental to a product’s overall sustainability. In the interactive session, we discussed the untapped potential of biodegradable materials, and participants learned more about how they can implement change in their organization in a 4 step process considering functionality, end-of-life disposal, sustainability priorities, and potential risks.
