Environment
Sustainability is the “new normal” as procurement can play a leading role in reducing their companies supply chain footprint and moving towards a circular business model. Environmental trends are driven by the threat of resource scarcity. As natural resources such as water, oil, and rare earths become scarcer, the likelihood of disruptions increases. At the same time, climate change will accelerate the risk of natural disasters such as hurricanes or volcanic eruptions. With most greenhouse gases stemming from Scope-3 emissions in the n-tier, companies must develop a strategy to keep supply chains robust in the face of environmental concerns. In the following chapter, we identified three refined Environmental trends that are analysed in detail: Resource Efficiency, Circularity, and CO2 Management

The Macrotrends for Environment
Each macrotrend contains microtrends. Click on the highlighted text below to zoom into each microtrend in detail.
Resource Efficiency
Resource Efficiency in procurement focuses on optimising resource usage to minimise waste, reduce costs, and enhance sustainability. This includes the adoption of Bio-Based Materials, which are sustainable and renewable alternatives to conventional synthetic inputs, and Sustainable Energy Solutions that use alternative energy sources with lower carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels.
Circular Economy
Circular Economy emphasises designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems. This includes Strategic Sourcing for Circularity, which aligns procurement activities with multiple lifecycles of a product, and Circular Procurement Partnerships which foster collaboration among companies to implement circular strategies.
CO2 Tracking & Management
CO2 Tracking focuses on systematically quantifying and managing carbon emissions across the entire value chain. This includes Carbon Accounting, which provides transparency regarding emissions, and CO2 Management Incentives, which link managerial compensation to the achievement of sustainability goals.
